Life/Career Competency Framework

CTE Technical Assistance Center of New York

The Life/Career Competencies Framework helps teachers recognize and provide feedback on classroom behaviors and competencies associated with career readiness.

What This Includes

Skills addressed: Career Smarts, Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, Engagement, Information, Leadership, Observation, Perseverance, Problem Solving, Productivity, Self-control

Framework

  • Includes seventeen broad competencies, each with four levels of performance
  • Each level of performance (exemplary, proficient, developing, beginning) is described with demonstrable examples specific to that competency
  • Interactive features allow users to search, select, and modify a personalized framework according to program and institution goals

Key Takeaways

  • Instructors use performance measures and examples to assess student work or create rubrics for projects, papers, classes or programs of study.
  • Employers, instructors, and career coaches can select performance measures to create employability profiles or evaluate workplace learning.
  • Skills are applicable and recognizable within a variety of settings. For example, one sub-skill within the communication skill is “works effectively with diverse teams.” Instructors and facilitators can document skill mastery when they see a student who listens to, shares with, and supports the efforts of others and who uses respectful and appropriate statements, responses, and body language.

The Career and Technical Education (CTE) Technical Assistance Center (TAC) of New York is an initiative of the New York State Education Department that supports CTE programs and programming. The center does this through increasing access to quality CTE programs, supporting at-risk students in those programs, improving the career development pathways for students, and developing networks between educational institutions and employers. The Life/Career Competencies Framework is the synthesis of several research efforts with multiple stakeholders, including work with Model Schools (a statewide initiative that offers support to teachers in the area of technology integration).
