Key Takeaways

  • Guidebook is designed for faculty, teachers, trainers, and administrators to integrate resiliency competencies into curricula.
  • Competencies are designed to be taught and assessed alongside workforce and academic skills. For example, Bunker Hill Community College uses the curriculum alignment table to integrate competencies from the resilience model into an information and technology computer lesson on big data. Learners complete an activity and assessment to “create an accurate plot using multiple datasets” and “properly identify and carry out an unforeseen but necessary step or series of steps” (Competency CT3).

The Northeast Resiliency Consortium (NRC) brought together seven community colleges in 2013 to address the importance of teaching resilience. To do this work, NRC applied for, and was awarded, a $23.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College Career Training program. NRC together with Achieving the Dream developed the Resiliency Competency Model, and also developed the accompanying principles, guidelines, and tools for implementation. Version Two of the guide was published in 2018.
